GAR reports this year that we have been representing a Mauritius-based commodities group in a US$120m investment treaty claim against Mozambique over the seizure of shipments of pigeon peas and other foods.
The firm also joined a large co-counsel team representing Canadian paper group Paper Excellence in a US$3 billion ICC claim launched at the beginning of 2025 against companies controlled by Brazil’s Batista brothers. The case concerned their alleged failure to comply with an earlier award mandating the sale of a pulp producer. Paper Excellence settled the high-profile dispute in May 2025, with the consortium paying US$2.6 billion to repurchase a stake in the pulp producer.
The firm was acting for Swiss-based mining group Solway on a US$500 million UNCITRAL claim against Liberia concerning the expropriation of an iron ore mining project. The case is no longer with Signature following the departure of counsel Bernhard Maier in April 2025 to join Browne Jacobson as its first head of arbitration.
We also advised US oil and gas investor Discovery Global in a US$133 million ICSID claim against Slovakia over the state’s alleged failure to protect a drilling project that was disrupted by protesters. The case was dismissed in a January 2025 award and Slovakia is now pursuing enforcement of a costs award in the US courts.
