Founded in 1957, the AFA is an independent, non-profit, organisation in France with a distinctly international outlook, playing a key role in shaping modern arbitration practice in the French and broader civil law tradition. The AFA's mission is to promote arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, provide institutional support for arbitral proceedings, and contribute to the development of arbitration culture and ethics.
The AFA’s governance and operations are structured around the following key bodies:
- The Board of Directors (Conseil d’administration): the Board comprises leading arbitration practitioners, scholars, and representatives of the business and legal communities. The Board defines the strategic direction of the institution and oversees its development.
- The Arbitration Committee (Comité d’arbitrage): this Committee is a select body charged with monitoring the application of AFA arbitration rules, appointing and confirming arbitrators, and ensuring the integrity and quality of proceedings. It plays a vital role in maintaining procedural fairness, efficiency, and trust in the institution’s work.
- The AFA also includes an Ethics Committee, working groups, and a Secretariat, which together support the institution’s operations and thought leadership.
The AFA is committed to promoting arbitration best practices in the community, organising conferences, seminars, and training programmes throughout the year, and regularly publishes scholarly and practical contributions to the field.
Commenting on her appointments, Amany said: "The Association Francaise d'Arbitrage is a respected voice within the French and European arbitration landscape and I am honoured to have been appointed to its Board of Directors and Arbitration Committee, alongside other brilliant and inspiring practitioners and voices in the industry. I look forward to working with the organisation and my fellow members in collaboration with other international arbitration institutions to achieve the AFA's aims."
Amany has over 10 years’ experience in international arbitration. She has strong expertise in commercial arbitration and investment treaty arbitration, representing clients in arbitration proceedings primarily under ICC and ICSID arbitration rules, as well as in ad hoc arbitrations. Amany is particularly experienced in the disputes arising out of the Middle East and North Africa.
